Press-On Nails: How to Apply Them and Make Them Last

Press-on nails give you a salon-style manicure at home in about ten minutes, without acrylic, drilling or a long appointment. The secret to making them last is preparation.

What you need

  • Your press-on nail set (for example Classic French Almond Nails (Rs. 449))
  • The glue or adhesive tabs included with your set
  • A nail file and a cuticle pusher or orange stick
  • Rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, and a cotton pad

How to apply press-on nails

  1. Remove old polish and wash your hands. Dry them completely.
  2. Push back your cuticles gently so the press-on sits directly on the nail.
  3. Lightly buff the surface of your natural nails to remove shine - this helps the glue grip.
  4. Wipe each nail with alcohol to remove oils. Do not touch your nails after this step.
  5. Size first, glue later. Lay out a press-on for each finger before applying anything. If one is between sizes, choose the slightly larger one and file the sides.
  6. Apply glue or a tab, then press the nail on at a slight angle from the cuticle down, and hold firmly for 20-30 seconds.
  7. Avoid water for an hour so the adhesive can set.

How to make them last longer

  • Wear gloves for washing dishes and cleaning.
  • Use your finger pads, not your nail tips, to open cans and press buttons.
  • Keep a little glue handy to re-fix a nail that lifts, rather than letting it catch.

How to remove them safely

Soak your fingertips in warm soapy water (a few drops of oil helps) for 10-15 minutes, then gently lift from the sides with a cuticle stick. Never rip them off - that is what damages natural nails.
