How to Clean Artificial Jewellery at Home (Without Ruining It)

By the HAFSAY team ·
Classic Korean Jewellery Set - HAFSAY

Artificial jewellery looks dull over time because of sweat, perfume, lotion and dust, not because it is cheap. The good news: you can clean it at home in five minutes with things you already have. The short answer is a soft dry cloth after every wear, and a quick wipe with mild soapy water when it looks dull. Never soak it, never scrub it, and never use toothpaste or lemon on gold-tone pieces.

What you need

  • A soft cotton or microfibre cloth (an old soft dupatta works too)
  • A small bowl of lukewarm water with one drop of mild soap or baby shampoo
  • A soft makeup brush or clean, very soft toothbrush
  • A dry towel and some air

Step by step: the safe way to clean

  1. Dust first. Wipe each piece with a dry cloth to remove surface dirt.
  2. Dip the cloth, not the jewellery. Dampen a corner of the cloth in the soapy water and squeeze it out well.
  3. Wipe gently. Clean the surface in small strokes. Use the soft brush around stones and pearls, very lightly.
  4. Rinse the cloth and wipe again with plain water to remove soap.
  5. Dry completely. Pat dry with a towel, then leave the piece in the air for 15 to 20 minutes before storing.

What to avoid

AvoidWhy
Soaking in waterWater can get under stones and loosen the glue
Toothpaste, baking soda, lemon or vinegarThey are abrasive or acidic and rub off the gold-tone finish
Silver dip or harsh cleanersMade for real metal, too strong for plated fashion jewellery
Hair dryer heatCan weaken glue and dull pearls

Cleaning by type

Pearl pieces

Faux pearls lose their glow with perfume. Wipe pieces like the Pearl Necklace (Rs. 299) or Gold Pearl Charm Bracelet (Rs. 399) with a barely damp cloth only, then dry. No soap on the pearls themselves.

Stone and crystal pieces

For CZ rings like the Gold Halo CZ Ring (Rs. 399) or Gold Pave Eternity Band Ring (Rs. 499), use the soft brush to lift dust from around the stones, then polish with a dry cloth to bring back the sparkle.

Chains and bangles

Thin chains like the Gold Chain Necklace (Rs. 299) tangle easily. Lay them flat on a towel while cleaning. Bangles such as the Roman Circle Onyx Bangle (Rs. 799) just need a wipe and a dry polish.

Storage keeps jewellery clean for longer

  • Store each piece separately in a small zip pouch to limit air and humidity.
  • Add a silica gel sachet (the ones that come in shoe boxes) to your jewellery box.
  • Keep jewellery out of the bathroom, where steam speeds up tarnishing.
  • Hang or lay necklaces flat so they do not knot.

The golden rule

Last on, first off. Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and makeup, and take it off before washing, wudu, exercise or sleeping. Do that and a simple dry wipe will keep most pieces looking new for a long time. Browse matching jewellery sets or Korean rings with free delivery across Pakistan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean artificial jewellery with toothpaste?

No. Toothpaste is abrasive and can rub off the gold-tone or silver-tone finish. Use a soft cloth with a little mild soapy water instead.

How often should I clean my fashion jewellery?

Wipe it with a dry soft cloth after every wear, and do a gentle soapy-cloth clean whenever it starts to look dull.

Why does my artificial jewellery turn black?

Moisture, sweat, perfume and humid air react with the finish. Keep pieces dry and stored in sealed pouches to slow this down.
