How to Layer Necklaces: The Korean Way, Step by Step

By the HAFSAY team ·
Gold Pearl Rectangle Necklace - HAFSAY

Layered necklaces are one of the signature Korean looks: two or three fine chains at different lengths that look effortless. The secret is simple: vary the length by about 5 cm between each layer, keep the chains thin, and give each layer a different texture or pendant. Here is how to do it.

The basic formula

LayerWhere it sitsWhat works best
TopAt the collarboneA plain fine chain or pearl strand
MiddleA few cm belowA small pendant like a heart or bow
Bottom (optional)Lower on the chestA slightly bigger or longer pendant

Three easy layered looks

1. Pearl and gold

Pair the Pearl Necklace (Rs. 299) at the top with the Gold Bow Pendant Necklace (Rs. 499) below. Soft, feminine and perfect for a dawat.

2. Hearts on hearts

Wear the Gold Chain Necklace (Rs. 299) close to the neck and the Gold Puffy Heart Necklace (Rs. 499) or Gold Hammered Heart Necklace (Rs. 499) lower. Great for everyday and photos.

3. Modern geometric

Combine the Gold Pearl Rectangle Necklace (Rs. 549) with the Butterfly Chain Necklace (Rs. 299) for a clean, modern look that works with shirts and blazers.

How to stop layered necklaces tangling

  • Put on the longest necklace first, then the shorter ones.
  • Keep at least 4 to 5 cm between lengths.
  • Mix chain styles: a smooth chain next to a beaded or pearl one tangles less than two identical chains.
  • Store them separately, laid flat, as we explain in how to clean artificial jewellery.

Layering with different necklines

  • Round neck kurta: keep layers short so they sit on top of the neckline.
  • V-neck: let the lowest pendant follow the point of the V.
  • Collared shirt: one fine chain under the collar plus one pendant is enough.
  • Abaya or hijab: layer over the abaya at the chest, or skip layering and choose a single statement piece.

Do not overdo it

When you layer necklaces, keep earrings small. Simple studs like the Gold Swirl Disc Studs (Rs. 449) balance the look. For more combinations, see Korean aesthetic jewellery looks and browse all Korean necklaces.

Frequently asked questions

How many necklaces should I layer?

Two or three is ideal. More than three usually looks crowded and tangles easily.

What length difference is best for layering?

Keep about 4 to 5 cm between each necklace so every layer is visible and they do not knot.

Can I mix gold and silver necklaces?

Yes. Mixing tones is very Korean. Add one piece that has both colours, or pearls, to tie the look together.
